All-terrain and 4x4 tyres work harder than standard road tyres. Here's what actually matters - the legal limit, load ratings for heavier vehicles, and roughly how long each tier tends to last.

Tread Depth for AT Tyres

1.6mm is the legal minimum, but replace AT tyres at 4mm for maintained off-road grip - below 3mm, off-road traction in mud reduces noticeably. Driving below the legal limit risks a GBP2,500 fine and 3 penalty points - per tyre.

Load Ratings for 4x4 and Pickup

BFGoodrich KO2 carries higher load ratings suitable for Defender, Ranger and Hilux payloads. We confirm load rating suitability before quoting - fitting a tyre with the wrong load index is an MOT failure.

The Wet-Grip Gap

Based on EU label testing, the difference between the best and worst-rated tyres for wet grip can be as much as 18 metres of stopping distance from 50mph - roughly four car lengths. This matters even more at higher vehicle weights.
