Tread Depth and When to Replace
A tyre does not have to look worn out to be unsafe or illegal. Here is what actually matters on a Yaris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4, Aygo X or Prius: the legal tread limit, how tyres are objectively rated, and what a hybrid needs from its tyres. Our Fengate workshop checks all of it, free, while you wait.
Hybrid Tyres and Low Rolling Resistance
Toyota hybrids benefit from low rolling resistance tyres, which improve fuel efficiency and help protect electric range. Fitting standard tyres to a Prius, Yaris Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid or C-HR is not dangerous, but it does reduce the fuel and efficiency advantage the hybrid system is designed to deliver. Hybrids also carry extra battery weight and deliver instant torque from a standstill, so tread and pressure deserve a closer eye. We check your original fitment and the EU label figures before anything is ordered, so your Toyota keeps the economy it was built for.
The Legal Tread Limit
1.6mm is the legal minimum across the central three quarters of the tread, and it must be met around the entire circumference. Below that you risk a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points, per tyre, plus an MOT failure. We recommend replacing at 3mm, because wet stopping distances lengthen noticeably below that point.
The EU Tyre Label
Every tyre sold in the UK carries a label rating three things: fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise, each graded A to G. On a hybrid the fuel efficiency grade matters more than most drivers realise, and the label is a far more objective way to compare two tyres than the brand name on the sidewall.
The Wet Grip Gap
Based on EU label testing, the gap between the best and worst rated tyres for wet grip can be as much as 18 metres of extra stopping distance from 50mph, roughly four car lengths. On a family Toyota carrying passengers and a battery pack, that margin is worth having on your side.
