1.6mm is the UK legal minimum across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its full circumference. Driving below it risks a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points, per tyre. We recommend replacing at 3mm. And worth knowing: a cheap new tyre fitted at 3mm is significantly safer than an expensive tyre worn down to 2mm.
