Major Car Service Peterborough — What You Get for £289
The major service is the most comprehensive service your car can receive. It includes everything in the full service, plus the components that only need attention every two years — spark plugs, brake fluid, timing belt inspection and a full OBD-II diagnostic scan. Here's exactly how the three service tiers compare.
Interim
Every 6 months or 6,000 miles
Full
Every 12 months or 12,000 miles
Major
Every 24 months or 24,000 miles
Also included — major only
Which Service Do I Need? Find Your Path in 30 Seconds
Under 12,000 miles/year
Standard average driving — annual full service at 12 months covers your car correctly. Book a major service every other year (years 2, 4, 6) to handle the 24-month components: spark plugs, brake fluid and timing belt inspection.
12,000–24,000 miles/year
Higher mileage means you hit 24,000 miles within 2 years. Your major service falls naturally at the 24-month mark alongside your MOT — one visit, fully sorted. Interim or full service at the 12-month halfway point.
Over 24,000 miles/year
At 24,000+ miles/year, you reach the major service mileage threshold in 12 months, not 24. Spark plugs, brake fluid and transmission fluid all degrade faster under high-intensity use. Major service annually — call us to build a schedule around your mileage.

Timing belt replacement
We inspect and report on belt condition. If replacement is needed, we quote separately — price varies by engine. We never replace without quoting first.
Brake pads & discs
We measure and record brake pad thickness in mm. If pads need replacing, we quote on the spot — you approve before any work starts.
Tyre replacement
Tyre condition and tread depth are recorded. Tyres below legal limit or structurally compromised are quoted separately at competitive prices.
Service book stamped. OBD report issued. Digital record emailed same day.
Do I Need a Major Service, a Full Service or an Interim?
Three different services, three different situations. Find your path below — then check the comparison table to see exactly what each service includes and what the major adds over the full.
Last service under 12 months ago · under 12,000 miles driven since
Your next service is a Full or Interim
You're within a standard service schedule. A full service at 12 months keeps your car correctly maintained. Schedule a major service at the 24-month mark — that's when spark plugs, brake fluid and the timing belt inspection are due.
Last service 18–24+ months ago · or 20,000+ miles since last major
You need a Major Service now
You've reached the major service interval. Spark plugs are degrading. Brake fluid has absorbed moisture for 2+ years — boiling point is dropping. Timing belt hasn't been inspected. OBD fault codes may have accumulated silently.
Never had a major service · or bought the car used without history
Book a major service today
If you've never had a major service or bought a used car without knowing its full history, you don't know when brake fluid was last changed, whether the timing belt has been inspected, or what fault codes are stored on the ECU. A major service answers all three questions at once.
You May Need a Major Service If… Six Warning Signs
Car is 4+ years old
Most manufacturers' 24-month service interval has been exceeded. Brake fluid, spark plugs and timing belt inspection are all overdue.
Book Major Now →Never had an OBD diagnostic scan
Fault codes can accumulate without triggering a warning light. A major service OBD scan reads all stored and pending codes — revealing issues invisible to a visual check.
Book Major Now →Brake pedal feels soft or spongy
Classic sign of brake fluid moisture contamination — the fluid's boiling point has dropped and vapour is compressing under hard braking. A safety issue that won't show up on an MOT.
Book Major Now →Fuel economy has dropped recently
Worn spark plugs cause misfires, wasted fuel and increased DPF loading on petrol engines. A 5–10% economy drop after 30,000+ miles often points to plugs past their replacement interval.
Book Major Soon →Service book shows full services only
If every stamp in the book is a "full service" with no major in sight, brake fluid has never been changed. Timing belt has never been inspected. The gap in the history is the problem.
Book Major Soon →Bought used — history unknown or incomplete
You can't know what the previous owner skipped. A major service at purchase resets the 24-month clock — you know exactly what's been done and when the next one is due.
Book Major Soon →Interim vs Full vs Major — What Each Service Includes

Which Drivers Need a Major Car Service — Your Profile
Four types of driver arrive at a major service from different directions. Every one of them has the same outcome — a car that's properly reset at its most comprehensive maintenance interval. Find your profile below.
Full services every year — but never a major
You've been servicing your car regularly — full service every 12 months, service book full of stamps. But if none of those stamps say "major service", your brake fluid has never been changed, your spark plugs have never been replaced, and your timing belt has never been inspected. Full services don't include any of the three.
20,000–40,000+ miles a year — Fengate, A1, delivery routes
Amazon Flex, DHL, taxi, private hire, A1 commuter — at 24,000 miles per year you hit the major service mileage threshold in exactly 12 months, not 24. Spark plugs, brake fluid and transmission fluid all degrade faster under high-intensity use. Waiting 24 months at your mileage means running on degraded safety-critical components for a full year.
"Full service history" — but no major on the record
You bought a used car with a service book full of stamps. But every stamp says "full service" — no major, no brake fluid change, no timing belt inspection. You've inherited a car whose safety-critical fluids may be 4+ years old and whose timing belt has never been examined. "Full service history" doesn't mean "major service history".
Leaving the dealer — time to do it properly
Your car has been dealer-serviced through the warranty period — years 1, 2 and 3. Now at year 4 or 5, you're switching to an independent for the first time. Dealer services during the warranty period are often "tick-box" services designed to satisfy warranty requirements, not to give your car the most comprehensive maintenance possible. This is the moment to do it properly.
Book your major service today — from £289, confirmed in 60 seconds.
OEM-spec parts throughout. Full OBD scan included. Timing belt inspected. Service book stamped. Digital record emailed. Warranty preserved.
What Happens to Your Brake Fluid Between Major Services — And Why It Matters
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air through microscopic gaps in your braking system's seals and hoses. That moisture accumulates every single month, silently lowering the fluid's boiling point and reducing your ability to stop safely in an emergency.
The science
Why fresh brake fluid becomes dangerous over time
Moisture absorption — 1–2% per year
Brake fluid absorbs atmospheric moisture through seal permeation and reservoir cap gaps at approximately 1–2% water content per year. There is no way to prevent this — it is a physical property of glycol-ether brake fluid.
Boiling point collapse
Fresh DOT4 fluid boils at 230°C (dry boiling point). At 3% water content — typical after 2+ years — the wet boiling point drops to around 155°C. Brake calipers routinely exceed 200°C in a hard stop from motorway speed.
Vapour lock — the failure mode
When fluid boils locally in the caliper it creates vapour bubbles. Vapour compresses — brake fluid doesn't. Your brake pedal travels to the floor. At 70mph, this is the difference between stopping and not stopping.
The major service fix
Every major service at Ace Tyres includes a full brake fluid drain and replacement with the correct DOT specification for your car. Boiling point is reset. Vapour lock risk eliminated. No extra charge — it's part of the £289.

18–30 months in serviceDangerous Fluid
30+ months in serviceThe MOT — what it misses
The MOT tests whether your brakes can stop the car within a defined distance. It does not test brake fluid boiling point, moisture content or chemical condition. A car with Stage 4 fluid — boiling point below 155°C — will pass its MOT with flying colours, because the test doesn't involve the sustained high-temperature braking that triggers vapour lock.
Passing your MOT does not mean your brake fluid is safe. Only a major service tests and replaces it.
The major service — what it fixes
Every major service at Ace Tyres includes a complete brake fluid drain and refill using the correct DOT specification for your car. The fluid's boiling point is reset to factory standard. We record the replacement in your written service report.
Included in every major service at £289 — no additional charge, no upsell required.

Brake fluid included in every major service — from £289, same day.
No extra charge. No appointment needed beyond the major service slot. Call or WhatsApp and your slot is confirmed within 60 seconds.
Timing Belt — The Single Most Expensive Thing a Major Service Catches
Every major service at Ace Tyres includes a timing belt inspection — condition, age and mileage checked against the manufacturer's replacement interval. An ignored timing belt costs £2,000–£6,000+ to put right. A major service inspection costs £289. No other routine appointment looks at it.
What it does — and why it cannot be ignored
Synchronises crankshaft and camshaft
The timing belt keeps the crankshaft (which drives the pistons) and camshaft (which opens the valves) rotating in precise synchrony. Timing must be exact to within fractions of a degree at up to 6,000 RPM.
Rubber under extreme heat and load
The belt is a reinforced rubber component operating inside a hot, oil-misted engine bay. Heat, tension cycles and age cause it to harden, crack and delaminate — a process invisible from the outside.
Replaced on a fixed interval — not when it breaks
Every manufacturer specifies a replacement interval (typically 40,000–100,000 miles or 4–7 years). You replace it before it fails — not after. A belt that fails gives no warning.
Most modern cars use interference engines — where pistons and valves share the same cylinder space at different times. If the belt snaps, pistons hit open valves at engine speed. The engine is destroyed in a fraction of a second.
The failure sequence — catastrophic, instant, expensive
Belt snaps — engine stops instantly
No warning, no gradual deterioration. The engine cuts out at speed. Steering assist and brake servo both fail simultaneously — the car becomes significantly harder to control.
Pistons collide with open valves
On an interference engine, the out-of-sync pistons slam into open valves at engine speed. Bent valves, cracked valve seats, scored cylinder walls, damaged pistons — all in the same moment.
Engine rebuild or full replacement
Repair cost: £2,000–£6,000+ depending on engine type and extent of damage. Many vehicles are written off as uneconomical to repair. Some engines cannot be rebuilt at all.
No warning before failure
There is no warning light for timing belt condition. The car runs normally right up to the point of failure. A pre-failure inspection at major service is the only way to manage the risk.
Timing Belt Condition Timeline — Where Does Your Car Sit?
Under 40,000 miles / under 4 years
No action required yetBelt is within most manufacturers' specified service life. At the major service inspection, we confirm condition and record the mileage against your car's specific replacement interval. No action needed — but the clock is noted.
40,000–70,000 miles / 4–6 years
Inspection essential — quote providedMany popular engines (VW, Audi, Vauxhall) have replacement intervals of 60,000–80,000 miles. At this stage the belt is approaching its limit — we assess visible condition, tension and surface integrity and advise on replacement timing. You decide.
At or past manufacturer interval — replace now
Do not delay — failure risk is realAt or past the manufacturer's replacement interval, the belt must be replaced. We provide a written quote before any work starts — replacement is never done without your approval. Includes tensioner and water pump where manufacturer recommends.
Timing Belt Intervals by Manufacturer — Is Yours a Belt or Chain?
Major service — belt inspection included
full major service · timing belt inspection · written report
Belt failure — uninspected, unannounced

We inspect — we never replace without quoting first.
At every major service, we inspect the timing belt condition and measure the current mileage against the manufacturer's replacement interval. If the belt is within its service life, we document the condition and note when replacement is next due. If the belt is approaching or past its interval, we provide a written quote — no work starts until you approve it. Timing belt replacement is never added to a service bill without discussion.

Major Service + MOT — One Day, Fully Sorted for Two Years
At 24 months, your car needs both a major service and an MOT. Book them together and the major service runs first — by the time the MOT tester sees your car, the OBD has been scanned, the brakes are on fresh fluid and every common failure point has already been addressed.
One visit — not two separate trips
Booking major service and MOT separately means two drop-offs, two pick-ups and two mornings without your car. Booked together, both happen in the same 2.5–3 hour appointment. We carry out the major service first, then run the MOT on a car that's already been comprehensively checked.
Car enters MOT in its best possible state
A car going into an MOT after a major service isn't just had its lights checked. It's had its OBD fault codes cleared, brakes put on fresh fluid, suspension fully inspected and every common failure point resolved. The MOT tester sees a car at its best — not one that went in with unresolved issues.

What the Major Service Resolves Before the MOT Tester Sees Your Car
These are the most common MOT failure categories. Every one is directly addressed by the major service — most more thoroughly than an interim or full service could.
A major service goes further than a full or interim service before an MOT. The OBD-II scan clears pending fault codes that could trigger the engine management warning light during the test. Fresh brake fluid means the brake performance test uses a system at peak efficiency. New spark plugs and air filter optimise combustion emissions — another MOT test category. On a major, the car isn't just road-legal. It's at its best.

At 24 months, your car needs both — book them together, not apart.
Most drivers don't realise that at the 24-month mark, their car is due for both a major service (24 months / 24,000 miles) and its second MOT (first MOT is at 3 years, then annually thereafter, so year 2 renewal often falls close to the major service interval). Booking together saves one day, one drop-off, and is typically £20–£40 cheaper than booking separately — because we can schedule both without a return appointment.

The OBD-II Diagnostic Scan — What It Finds That No Visual Inspection Can
Since 2001, every car sold in the EU has an OBD-II port. Your car's ECU continuously monitors hundreds of sensors across the engine, transmission, brakes and emissions systems. When any reading falls outside specification, the ECU stores a fault code — even if no warning light ever appears. The major service OBD-II scan reads every one of them.
The car's built-in self-monitoring system
On-Board Diagnostics version II (OBD-II) is a standardised system mandated across all EU cars from 2001. A network of sensors feeds continuous readings to the ECU — engine temperature, fuel trim, oxygen levels, wheel speeds, throttle position and hundreds more. The ECU knows when any reading is outside the manufacturer's acceptable range before you do.
Professional read — not a generic OBDII dongle
Consumer OBD readers from Halfords or Bluetooth dongles read generic P-codes only. Our professional multi-brand diagnostic equipment reads all four code types across all six ECU categories — including manufacturer-specific codes that generic tools miss entirely. Each scan produces a complete fault code report.
Connect professional diagnostic unit to OBD-II port — typically under the dashboard near the steering column
Read all stored, pending and manufacturer-specific fault codes across every ECU on the car — engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag, body control and more
Document every code found with its description, severity and recommended action — printed in your written service report
Clear codes that relate to completed service work (e.g. oil life reset, service indicator) — leaving only genuine faults for your attention
Four Types of Fault Code — Most Drivers Only Know About One
The warning light on your dashboard represents only one fault code type. The other three accumulate silently — and only a professional scan reveals them.
Type 1 — Confirmed DTC
Active Fault — Warning Light On
A confirmed Diagnostic Trouble Code. The ECU has detected a fault on multiple consecutive drive cycles. The warning light is illuminated on your dashboard. You know something is wrong — but not what, or how serious.
Type 2 — Pending Code
Early Warning — No Light Yet
The ECU has detected an out-of-range reading on one drive cycle but not yet enough to confirm the fault. No warning light appears — but the problem exists and is worsening. Early intervention prevents a confirmed fault.
Type 3 — Freeze Frame
Snapshot at Fault Moment
When a fault triggers, the ECU stores a snapshot of all sensor readings at that exact moment — speed, load, temperature, fuel trim. This context data pinpoints whether the fault occurs at idle, under load or at temperature.
Type 4 — Manufacturer Codes
Brand-Specific — Generic Readers Miss These
Beyond the standardised OBD-II codes, every manufacturer encodes proprietary fault codes specific to their systems. Generic readers cannot access these — our professional multi-brand equipment reads manufacturer codes for all 20 makes we service.
Six ECU Systems the Scan Reads — Not Just the Engine
Most drivers assume OBD only covers the engine. It covers every networked system in the car.
Engine Management
Fuelling, ignition timing, throttle response, lambda sensor output, MAF sensor, EGR valve, turbo boost pressure, knock sensor. Most common fault category — also the most varied.
Gearbox & Transmission
Gear shift solenoids, torque converter lock-up, clutch slippage (auto), input/output shaft speed sensors. Often silent until the gearbox fails — pending codes give early warning.
ABS, Brakes & Stability
Wheel speed sensors, ABS pump and solenoids, ESP/traction control modules. A faulty wheel speed sensor may not trigger an ABS light until conditions trigger the system.
Body Control & Airbags
Airbag module, seatbelt pre-tensioners, central locking, electric windows, climate control, BCM. Airbag faults are safety-critical — a stored B-code means the system may not deploy in a collision.
Emissions, DPF & EGR
DPF fill level and regeneration failures, EGR valve operation, lambda sensor response, catalytic converter efficiency. DPF pending codes are critical — ignored DPF faults lead to forced regeneration failures costing £1,000+.
ECU Network & Communication
CAN bus communication faults between ECUs — engine to ABS, gearbox to ESP, BCM to instrument cluster. U-codes often present as intermittent unexplained dashboard behaviour that a visual check cannot diagnose.
Without OBD scan
Visual inspection alone — what it misses
With major service OBD scan
Full diagnostic read — nothing hidden
A written OBD scan report — every code documented, every time.
Whether we find twelve fault codes or zero, you receive a written report. Every code is listed with its description, severity classification and a plain-English explanation of what it means for your car. Clean scans are documented too — proof for buyers, insurers or warranty claims that the car's ECU was checked and clear at the date of service.

Major Service History — What It Does to Your Car's Resale Value
Two cars. Same make, same model, same year. Six stamps each. One has only full services. One alternates full and major. A buyer who knows what they're looking at will pay more for the second — because each major service stamp answers the questions that keep buyers up at night.
Full services only — 6 stamps in 6 years
Full service every year · no major service on record
"Has the brake fluid ever been changed? Was the timing belt inspected? Were the spark plugs replaced? I can't see any of that here — was it just oil changes?"
Full + Major alternating — properly maintained
Full service odd years · Major service even years · 6 stamps
"This is what I want to see. Major services at years 2, 4 and 6 — brake fluid changed, timing belt inspected, OBD scan done. Owner clearly looked after it. I'll pay the asking price."
What a Major Service Stamp Tells a Buyer
A buyer who understands service history reads each major service stamp as proof of six specific things that a full service cannot confirm.
Brake fluid was changed
The safety-critical fluid that degrades silently was renewed on a documented date. The braking system is on fresh DOT-spec fluid. No guesswork on boiling point.
Spark plugs were replaced
Engine is burning cleanly. Fuel economy is reset. No accumulated misfire risk. The combustion system is at its most efficient from the major service date.
Timing belt was inspected
The highest-consequence component was examined and documented. The mileage vs manufacturer interval is on record. The buyer knows the belt is not a ticking clock.
OBD scan was clean
A professional full diagnostic scan found no hidden fault codes. The ECU was checked and clear on the service date — documented in the written report the buyer can request.
The owner didn't cut corners
A major service costs more. An owner who spent £289 on the expensive service — not just the £169 minimum — demonstrably cared about the car. That signals care in general.
Documented in writing, not just stamped
Each major service produced a written 65-point report with measured values — brake pad thickness in mm, OBD scan results, timing belt condition. Paper evidence, not just a stamp.
The maths over 6 years
Major service history pays for itself at resale
over 6 years · £60/year difference
Full-only history: £169 × 6 = £1,014
Full+Major history: £169 × 3 + £289 × 3 = £1,374

Block Exemption means you don't need the dealer for warranty — a qualified independent does the same job at 40–60% of the cost.
Kwik Fit · Halfords · National Tyres
typical major service price range nationally
National chain pricing looks competitive, but generic diagnostic equipment misses manufacturer-specific fault codes — a significant gap on a major service scan.
Independent · Fengate · PE1 5XA

Independent overhead structure means a genuinely competitive price with no compromise on parts quality, diagnostic depth or documentation.
Five Reasons Peterborough Drivers Choose Ace Tyres for Their Major
OEM-spec parts — no substitutions, ever
Every component we replace at a major service meets or exceeds the manufacturer's original specification. Spark plugs are the correct grade and heat range for your engine — not a generic alternative. Brake fluid is the correct DOT specification. Filters are OEM-equivalent. No grey-market substitutions, no cost-cutting on critical parts.
Professional diagnostics — all 20 makes, full read
Our professional multi-brand diagnostic equipment reads all four fault code types — confirmed, pending, freeze-frame and manufacturer-specific — across all six ECU systems for all 20 makes we service. Generic chain OBD readers only access standard P-codes. Manufacturer-specific fault codes are invisible to them. We document every code in a written report with severity ratings.
Timing belt inspection — documented, not guessed
We follow manufacturer-specific inspection criteria for every timing belt check — not a generic visual glance. We record the current mileage against your car's exact replacement interval, assess visible condition and surface integrity, and include the findings in your written service report. If replacement is approaching, we quote separately. You decide.
Same-day available — confirmed in 60 seconds
Most national chains and dealers require a booking 2–3 days in advance for a major service, with strict drop-off windows. Call or WhatsApp us and your same-day 3-hour major service slot is confirmed in 60 seconds. Mon–Fri 9am–6pm, Sat 9am–4pm. Wait at the garage or drop and collect — your choice.
Written report — every measured value on record
Every major service produces a full written inspection report — not a ticked checklist. Brake pad thickness in mm on all four corners. Tyre tread depths in mm. OBD fault code listing with severity ratings. Timing belt condition and interval status. Battery CCA test result. Physical stamp in your service book plus digital report emailed same day.

Belt/ChainSpark Plug & Brake Fluid Reference — What Goes in Your Car
Grade 1
Standard Copper Plugs
Solid copper core, nickel alloy tip. Shortest service life — replaced most frequently at major services. Typical on older engines and budget specifications.
Grade 2
Platinum Plugs
Platinum tip extends electrode life significantly. Mid-range interval — used in many mainstream European and Asian engines from 2008 onwards.
Grade 3
Iridium Plugs
Iridium alloy tip — hardest electrode material, finest firing diameter, best combustion efficiency. Specified for most premium and modern engines.
Brake Fluid
DOT3 · DOT4 · DOT5.1
DOT4 is standard for most modern European cars. DOT3 for many Japanese/Korean cars. DOT4 LV (Low Viscosity) for BMW, Mercedes, MINI. DOT5.1 for performance vehicles. We use the correct spec for your car — always.
Timing belt or chain? Which plug grade? We check by registration before you arrive.

Three Major Services That Found What Others Missed
Bought a 4-year-old Focus with what the dealer called "full service history". Booked a major service at Ace because I'd read about brake fluid going off. They found stored fault codes on the OBD — two pending codes nobody had acted on — and brake fluid testing at 3.5% moisture content. The previous owner had clearly never had a proper major service in four years. Worth every penny of the £289 just for the peace of mind on the brakes alone.

Do about 30,000 miles a year out of Fengate — delivery work mostly. Was just doing a full service every 12 months thinking that was enough. They explained that at my mileage I need a major every 12 months, not 24, because I hit the 24,000-mile threshold in a year. They checked my gearbox fluid condition and it had already started to darken. Potentially saved me a very expensive gearbox repair. Booked major services twice a year now and won't go anywhere else.

My Golf had only ever had full services — looked after, I thought — but never a major in six years. First major at Ace Tyres and they found the timing belt was approaching VW's replacement interval and two pending fault codes that nobody had acted on. I had no warning lights, car felt perfectly fine. They quoted for the belt before touching it and I approved it. Worth every penny — a snapped belt on a Golf is a new engine. Honest garage, clear explanations, no pressure.

1 How much is a major car service in Peterborough?
From £289 at Ace Tyres, Unit 6, Second Drove, Fengate, Peterborough PE1 5XA. Fixed price — no hidden extras, no upsell. Includes all 65+ checks, oil change to manufacturer specification, new oil filter, spark plug replacement (petrol), brake fluid drain and replacement, air and cabin filter replacement, full OBD-II diagnostic scan, timing belt inspection and a written service report with all measured values.
From £289 · fixed price · same-day2 What is included in a major car service?
Everything in a full service — oil change, air filter, pollen filter, OBD-II scan, battery test, full 65-point inspection — plus the components unique to the major service:
Spark plug replacement to OEM specification · Brake fluid drain and replacement (correct DOT spec) · Timing belt inspection with written condition report · Transmission fluid level and condition check · Fuel filter (diesel) · Coolant antifreeze strength test. All 65+ checks recorded with measured values in a written report.
65+ checks · full written report3 How often should I have a major car service?
Every 24 months or 24,000 miles — whichever comes first. High-mileage drivers covering 24,000+ miles per year should have a major service every 12 months, as they reach the mileage threshold annually.
If you have never had a major service, or bought a used car without major service history in the records, book one now — regardless of when the last full service was.
Every 24 months or 24,000 miles4 What is the difference between a major service and a full service?
A full service (from £169, every 12 months) covers oil change, air filter, pollen filter, OBD scan and a comprehensive 65-point inspection. A major service (from £289, every 24 months) includes everything in the full service, plus spark plug replacement, brake fluid change, timing belt inspection, transmission fluid check and fuel filter (diesel).
The major service is the comprehensive two-year reset that addresses the components with a 24-month wear cycle — none of which appear in a full or interim service.
Major = Full + spark plugs + brake fluid + timing belt5 Does a major car service include spark plugs?
Yes, always. Spark plug replacement is included in every major car service at Ace Tyres. We replace all plugs to the manufacturer's specification — standard copper, platinum or iridium — at the correct grade, heat range and gap for your specific engine. Spark plug type and interval are confirmed by registration number before the service begins.
Spark plugs always included — OEM spec6 Does a major service include a brake fluid change?
Yes. Brake fluid drain and replacement is always included. We replace with the correct specification — DOT3, DOT4, DOT4 LV or DOT5.1 — for your car.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs atmospheric moisture at ~1–2% per year, progressively lowering its boiling point. After two years, the boiling point can fall below the threshold where vapour lock occurs under hard emergency braking. The major service is the only routine appointment that tests and replaces it.
Brake fluid always included — correct DOT spec7 Does a major service include a timing belt inspection?
Yes. Every major service includes a timing belt inspection — condition assessed, current mileage recorded against your manufacturer's replacement interval, written condition report provided. If the belt is approaching or past its interval, we provide a separate written quote before any work starts. Timing belt replacement is never carried out without your approval.
This inspection is not included in full or interim services — the major service is the only routine appointment where the timing belt is examined.
Timing belt inspection always included8 Does a major service include an OBD diagnostic scan?
Yes. A full professional OBD-II diagnostic scan is included in every major service. Our multi-brand equipment reads all confirmed fault codes, pending codes (faults without a warning light), freeze-frame data and manufacturer-specific codes across all six ECU systems.
We provide a written fault code report listing every code found, its description, severity rating and recommended action. Even a clean scan is documented — proof that the ECU was checked and clear at the service date.
Full OBD scan + written fault code report9 How long does a major car service take?
Typically 2.5 to 3 hours. All major services are completed the same day. You can wait in our reception at Fengate, or drop the car and collect later — we call or WhatsApp you as soon as it's ready.
Any additional work found during the service (e.g. brake pads at minimum thickness, timing belt at replacement interval) is quoted separately and approved by you before we proceed. Nothing is done without your explicit agreement.
2.5–3 hours · same day10 Does a major service at an independent garage void my warranty?
No. Under EU Block Exemption Regulation 461/2010 (retained in UK law), a vehicle manufacturer cannot void your warranty because your major service was carried out at a qualified independent garage, provided OEM-specification parts and lubricants are used.
At Ace Tyres we use manufacturer-specified oil grades, correct DOT brake fluid, OEM-equivalent spark plugs and OEM-equivalent filters. Your service book is stamped and a digital record is emailed the same day. Your warranty is fully preserved.
Warranty preserved — Block Exemption 461/201011 Can I book a major service and MOT on the same day?
Yes. We carry out the major service first, then the MOT. By the time the tester sees the car, the OBD-II has been scanned and pending codes cleared, brake fluid replaced, spark plugs renewed and every suspension and tyre item inspected. The car enters the MOT in its best possible condition.
Major service from £289 + MOT from £45 = from £334 combined. One drop-off, one pick-up, two years fully sorted.
Major + MOT from £334 · one visit12 Do you carry out same-day major services in Peterborough?
