What the MOT Does Not Check
The MOT is a minimum safety standard test, not a full mechanical health check. Passing your MOT does not mean your car is in perfect condition — it means it met the minimum legal requirements on test day. The following are not inspected during a Class 4 MOT and require a separate car service:

No immediate danger to road safety or the environment. Your car still passes the MOT but the defect is recorded and you should have it looked at soon.
Major Defect
Affects road safety or the environment. Your car fails the MOT and must be repaired before you can drive it legally. We can repair and re-test on the same visit.
Dangerous Defect
Poses direct risk to road safety. Your car fails the MOT and must not be driven until repaired. You can leave it at the garage for immediate repair — we'll re-test it free once fixed.

How to Prepare Your Car for MOT — 12-Point Home Checklist
Most MOT failures are caused by simple issues a driver can check themselves at home in under 30 minutes. Going through this list before your test could be the difference between a £45 pass and an unexpected repair bill plus a re-test fee.
All Exterior Lights
Turn on every light — headlights, sidelights, indicators, hazards, brake lights, fog and reversing. Walk the full car with a helper to check each one fires.
Tyre Tread Depth
Insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves across the full width of each tyre. If the outer rim of the coin is visible at any point, the tread is below the legal 1.6mm minimum.
Tyre Condition
Inspect each tyre for sidewall bulges, cuts, or exposed cords. Check that the tyres on each axle are the same type — mixing summer and winter tyres on one axle is an automatic fail.
Windscreen Chips & Cracks
Any chip larger than 10mm in the driver's primary view (Zone A — a 290mm band ahead of the steering wheel) will fail. Any crack anywhere on the windscreen is a major defect.
Wiper Blades & Washers
Wet the screen and run the wipers. Any smearing, juddering, or areas left uncleaned means the blades need replacing. Check the washer jets spray fluid and can reach the screen adequately.
Mirrors
The rear-view and driver's side mirror must be present, undamaged, and adjustable. The passenger side mirror is required if it was original equipment on the vehicle.
Seatbelts
Test every seatbelt in the car — pull each one fully out, check for fraying, cuts, or damage, and confirm the buckle clicks in and releases cleanly. Belts must retract smoothly.
Horn
Give the horn a proper press to confirm it sounds clearly and continuously. Musical or novelty horns are not permitted and will fail. If it sounds weak or intermittent, get it checked.
Number Plates
Both plates must be clean, securely fixed, and use the standard UK font with correct letter spacing. Tinted, 3D or incorrectly spaced plates fail. Front must be white, rear yellow.
Screenwash Level
The screenwash reservoir must contain enough fluid to operate the jets. The tester will run the washers — using plain water is fine, but an empty reservoir is a fail. Top up the night before.
Dashboard Warning Lights
Start the engine and check no warning lights stay on after it starts. An engine management light (MIL), ABS light, brake warning, or airbag/SRS light will all cause an automatic fail.
Exhaust & Emissions
Let the engine warm up fully before your test — this significantly improves your emissions reading. Listen for exhaust rattles or blowing which indicate a potential failure. Avoid short cold trips beforehand.

Lights & Electrics
- Blown headlight or brake light bulb
- Indicator not working or wrong colour
- Number plate light out
- Headlight beam aim too high or low
Turn on every light and walk round with a helper — hazards, reversing and fog included. Takes 3 minutes.
Suspension
- Worn or seized shock absorbers
- Corroded or broken coil spring
- Worn track rod end or ball joint
- Anti-roll bar bush deteriorated
Bounce each corner — car should settle after one rebound. Continued bouncing means worn shocks.
Brakes
- Brake pads worn below minimum
- Corroded discs or seized caliper
- Handbrake not holding on a slope
- Brake imbalance side to side
Apply the handbrake on a hill and release. Car must not move. Grinding noise when braking = book a check.
Tyres & Wheels
- Tread depth below 1.6mm legal limit
- Sidewall bulge, cut or cord exposed
- Mixed tyre types on same axle
- Wheel loose or damaged
Insert a 20p coin into the tread. If the coin rim is visible, your tyres are below the legal limit.
Visibility
- Windscreen chip in driver's zone
- Wiper blades smearing or streaking
- Washers blocked or not reaching screen
- Required mirror missing or damaged
Run wipers on a wet screen. Any smear or judder = replace blades. Chips over 10mm in driver's eyeline = fail.
Exhaust & Emissions
- CO₂ above limit — rich fuel mixture
- Diesel smoke opacity too high
- Exhaust leak at manifold or joint
- Catalytic converter removed or faulty
Let the engine fully warm up before your test. Cold engine = higher emissions reading. Clear any warning lights first.

Can I Drive on a Failed MOT?
If your car fails with a Major defect you can drive it only if your current MOT is still valid and only to a pre-booked repair appointment. If your current MOT has also expired, you cannot drive it at all. A Dangerous defect means you must not drive the vehicle under any circumstances — it poses an immediate risk. Book Up to a Month Early
You can book your MOT up to one calendar month before your current certificate expires. Your new certificate will run from the original expiry date — not the test date — so you don't lose any days.
